Default lighttpd/nginx behind Apache (selective forward-proxying)

Hi Everyone,

I am yet another soul trying to solve the Apache memory consumption
problem under a 256MB VPS.

I have come across quite a few reverse-proxy solutions based on
lighttpd/nginx (serving static content) in-front-of Apache (serving
dynamic content), however, these seem not only overly complex from the
configuration point of view, but also introduce possible issues with
SSL as well as correct IP identification.

So, the question is: has anyone tried to run lighttpd/nginx behind
Apache, using some kind of selective forward-Apache proxying, only for
a class of most commonly downloadable, large files (*.exe, *.avi,
etc.)? Perhaps having a secondary lighttpd/nginx server handle long
file downloads to free Apache process resources along with a low
KeepAliveTimeout for Apache would allow for a higher MaxClients, if I
understood the problem correctly?

Searched high and low for a possible solution, so far no success. Any
pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary
