Default Debian etch - can not X login

I recently installed Debian etch as second OS, as I want to move from
Fedora Core 1 that I currently use. I had no time to configure Debian
for a while, and now when I tried I can no longer login (kdm).

I can login fine in console (Ctrl/Alt/F1). /var/log/messages shows
nothing, nor does /var/log/Xorg.log.

But I found this in ~/xsession-errors:

Xsession: X session started for user iva at Fri Mar2 09:30:20 GMT 2007
open: Permission denied

So X started, and when I enter username and password screen blanks for a
second, and then returns to login again.

I did chown -R iva.iva /home/iva
