Default Putty process won't detach [OT]

Sorry for OT. I am unable to close putty window using ctrl-d or exit
after a heavy duty process was started. This has happened twice. Any
fixes are appreciated.

BTW, the process is running in the background (started as "myprocess
&"). There is no command prompt after the process was started and
control-d was typed.
