Generally I'd endorse that suggestion.

We run Centos-Linux boxes and Win-ME boxes side by side
running (developing) the same apps and see almost identical speeds.
As memory was mentioned I'll just point out its windows itself that
has the 500M limit and weve never seen it go over 125Mb- if you use vcache its
back to hardware limitation again.(Ours have and use 2G each)

The ME boxes make for a great responsive system for DB work we find. (We did
trial Vista but decided life was far too short - we have work to do that doesnt
involve a lifetime of buggering about every time we try to do something - we
dumped that one real fast) And of course
we dont see any reason to limit our audience by not making stuff ME compatible
when an ME box can do anything a Vista box can if you really want it to (The
same hardware after all)

Also we dont use either XP or Vista here as we need the boxes online and
both have so many trapdoors and other means of (transparent/hidden) connection
its effectively impossible to firewall them reliably even with our hardware
firewalls. (Really - you should get someone in to check it out if you do that.)

I will say I prefer Centos over ME however but not from a performance point of
view. Just a personal preference. I can recommend Centos (after trying 4 others)
if you seriously consider Linux.
